Jamaican winger Leon Bailey is set to leave the Premier League after just one appearance for Aston Villa, joining Serie A giants AS Roma on loan, with the option to buy reportedly worth 22 million euros.
AS Roma confirmed the move on Wednesday, revealing the loan deal is set to run until the end of the current season, with the option to make the transfer permanent in July. Reports suggest that the Italian side will pay a loan fee of 1.5 million euros to Villa, in addition to covering Bailey's wages in full.
The 26-year-old forward, who played for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga from 2016 to 2022, never settled in England and was frozen out by Villa manager Steven Gerrard last October.
Despite describing joining Villa from Leverkusen as a dream come true, Bailey will likely view this move to Rome as another opportunity to reignite his career, especially if he manages to find his form under new Roma boss Jose Mourinho.
The dynamic winger, who is known for his pace and dribbling skills, has just three goals and six assists in 60 matches across all competitions for Villa.
Now, the former Belgian youth international will hope to help Roma, who are currently managed by a certain Jose Mourinho, challenge for the Serie A title this season.
Whether Bailey can settle in Rome and prove himself under the demanding eyes of the former Tottenham and Chelsea manager, remains to be seen.
