As 2025 begins, skywatchers worldwide are preparing to enjoy the first meteor shower of theyear—the Quadrantids. Known for its intensity, this celestial event occursannually in early January, with a brief but spectacular peak lasting just a fewhours. This year, viewing conditions are expected to favor parts of NorthAmerica, especially Mississippi.
What are theQuadrantids?
The Quadrantid meteor shower is a rare and intense display originating from thenortheast corner of the Boötes constellation. Its name comes from QuadransMuralis, an obsolete constellation named in 1795 by French astronomer J.J.Lalande. First observed in the 1830s by Belgian astronomer Adolphe Quetelet, the Quadrantids are believed to stem from asteroid 2003 EH1, a fragment of anextinct comet that disintegrated in 1490-91. During its peak, the shower canproduce 60 to 120 meteors per hour, though visibility depends on timing andlocation.
Where and When toWatch
This year, the Quadrantids will be best viewed in western regions of NorthAmerica during the pre-dawn hours of January 4. With Earth’s forward-facingside encountering meteors at high speed and no moonlight to hinder visibility, conditions are ideal for a spectacular show.
Beyond the U.S.,Canada, Northern Europe, Russia, China, Japan, and Korea may also catchglimpses of the shower, though visibility will vary. In 2024, the Quadrantidspeaked on January 3-4, with observers witnessing up to 120 meteors per hourunder optimal conditions. This year promises another breathtaking display forstargazers prepared to rise early for the event.
