Food Safety in Question: J&K Orders Compliance with FSSAI Rules

Recently, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government has ordered strict compliance with the rules and regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This comes in the wake of the shocking scam exposed in the valley where meat worth approximately Rs 7 crore was sold illegally since May 2021, exposing the vulnerability of the food safety system and highlighting risks to consumer health.

In a directive issued by the Department of Food Safety, the Commissioner of Food Safety, J&K, directed the joint enforcement teams, along with representatives from the meat export industry, to ensure strict compliance with the laws and standards established by the FSSAI. The teams have been directed toAcross the region, rigorous inspections will now be conducted to ensure that all meat being sold complies with the requisite standards and is clearly labelled with important information including date of manufacture, expiry date, and the name of the processing plant.

The move comes as a response to the recent scam, where it was revealed that there existed major loopholes in the system, which allowed the sale of unsafe and sub-standard meat products to unsuspecting consumers.

Speaking on the matter, a senior official from the food safety department stated that the department is committed to protecting the interests of consumers and ensuring that they have access to safe and wholesome food.

"The recent scam was a result of inadequate monitoring and lack of strict enforcement. We want to create more accountability in the system, and such illegal activities will not be tolerated," they said.

With these strengthened enforcement measures, the department aims to create a robust food safety ecosystem in the region that safeguards consumer health and strengthens the food safety standards of J&K.

Let's see what impact these enforcement actions will have on ensuring food safety and deterring future scams.
