Indore: Signboards with street names removed after BJP leader's objection

The signboards displaying street names in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have started being removed after an objection was raised by BJP leader Akash Vijayvargiya, the controversial politician who was jailed in 2019 after attacking a civic official with a cricket bat.

Official sources said Akash had raised objections to the signboards pointing out that many of them had either been put up without approval or had old/inappropriate names, and also that many boards were inconsistent with the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Officials said the opposition to the signboards was not a new development, but an ongoing process of the municipal corporation to ensure compliance with the specified guidelines. However, civic officials chose to expedite the process after Akash's letter to the mayor.

"There are signboards put up by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) as well as those installed by the Public Works Department (PWD). Many of these are inconsistent with the guidelines, improper, or even misleading. So, we have decided to remove them all and install new ones after following the specified guidelines," said a municipal corporation official.

The official added that the mayor and other senior officials had also inspected various locations to inspect the signboards and their removal.

"This is a part of the ongoing drive to ensure compliance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Urban Development," the official added.

Akash was arrested in 2019 after a video clip showed him assaulting a municipal corporation officer in Indore with a cricket bat over alleged corruption. The incident had drawn widespread criticism, especially on social media, and he was eventually sent to jail.

The 33-year-old, however, made a comeback after his father, Krishna Kumar Vijayvargiya, a senior BJP leader and former state minister, managed to get him elected to the Lok Sabha in the 2019 elections.

Earlier this month, Akash, who is now the BJP's chief whip in the Lok Sabha, was reassigned as the party's observer for the Indore district, sparking anger among the local leaders.

Several leaders had spoken out against Akash's appointment, pointing out that it was a blatant attempt by the BJP to impose an "outsider" in the local leadership.
