A man, reportedly "mentally incoherent", has been held for a failed attempt at scaling the Parliament wall in an early morning security breach. The shocking incident has put the security protocols of the Parliament of India under question.
At around 4 am on July 10, 2022, authorities received an alarm from one of the Parliament lawns, signalling a potential security breach. Police promptly arrived at the scene to find a 20-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh close to one of the perimeter walls. Apparently, the young man had tried to scale the wall, prompting the alarm.
According to the police, the man appeared to be mentally disturbed and was taken into custody. The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of the Parliament, which is highly guarded.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior officer of the Parliament Duty Officer said:
"The efficiency of our security protocols is of utmost importance. Incidents such as these put that to question. Although the intruder seemed to be unwell, whether it be a mental health issue or otherwise, we must assess if there are gaps in our security that enabled this breach under the premise of a wellness check."
This incident sheds light on the critical issue of ensuring the safety and security of public institutions, even more importantly, those of high-profile and significance. Given the young age of the intruder, mental health may have played a role, triggering concerns for the well-being of such a young person and highlighting the need for further inquiry and action, if needed.
