Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly raised concerns in the state assembly yesterday (Dec. 13) about 20 stampedes and police firings that took place in BJP-ruled states,
including the 2022 Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat and the recent stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
Speaking on the assembly floor, Siddaramaiah said that there have been 58 police firings and over 20 stampedes in BJP-ruled states since 2014, according to The New Indian Express. The CM reportedly questioned whether such incidents were "a coincidence or a well-planned plot to kill the innocent."
The CM also called for an impartial investigation into the incidents by a court-appointed panel. He further questioned whether such incidents were "a coincidence or a well-planned plot to kill the innocent."
Siddaramaiah has reportedly criticised the BJP for "not being able to maintain law and order" in states they govern, demanding an explanation for these incidents from the BJP.
The Gujarat Morbi bridge collapse, which killed over 130 people, occurred during a celebration to mark the Gujarati new year. An investigation into the incident found that the bridge collapse was the result of illegal overcrowding.
The Prayagraj stampede, which took place during the Kumbh Mela in April this year, left at least 18 people dead and at least 45 injured after a railing near a police control room gave way.
These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and preparedness of large-scale events and public spaces in India.
