'ECI discredited, G2 puppeteers defeated': Congress on SC directive

New Delhi, Dec 2 The Congress party on Sunday claimed victory after the Supreme Court dismissed petitions seeking an investigation into allegations of irregularities in the procurement of 36 Rafale jets from France.

The party, in a series of tweets, said the apex court's order had "discredited the ECI and defeated the puppeteers of the G2". It added that the judgment "has reaffirmed the contaminated political atmosphere under the BJP regime".

The BJP, meanwhile, welcomed the order and said it "endorsed the clean and honest reputation of the Narendra Modi government".

The Congress, which has been alleging corruption in the Rafale deal and demanding the government disclose the price of the aircraft, said the apex court's ruling was a "victory for truth and democracy".

It said the judgment "exposed dishonesty and corruption of PM, his cabal and the 'chowkidar' enterprise".

The party added: "Those who conspired to sabotage the Rafale deal for corrupt intentions and personal gains have been defeated".

Congress media in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said the apex court had concluded that there was no evidence of corruption or wrongdoing in the Rafale deal.

"The Congress party welcomes the SC judgment ... The Congress has always believed that the Prime Minister has nothing to hide and should come forward to clarify the truth to the citizens," he tweeted.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had alleged that the prime minister had "personally" negotiated the deal and his "friend" Anil Ambani had benefited from it.

Ambani's group, Reliance Defence, had partnered with Dassault Aviation, the French maker of Rafale jets, to execute the Rafale deal.

The BJP dismissed the Congress claims, with its national spokesperson Sambit Patra saying the opposition party was "living in a fantasy world".

"The Congress party should thank its stars that the Supreme Court has said there is no commercial interest in the Rafale deal," he told reporters.
