India’s employment sector marked a historic milestone in 2024,with the country taking significant strides toward its $5 trillion economictarget. The "India at Work 2024 Report" by Apna.com revealed aremarkable surge in job applications, totalling 7 crore, a 25% increase fromthe previous year. This growth was largely fueled by higher workforceparticipation from women and youth, along with factors such as flexible workpolicies, gender-specific initiatives, and the rise of women-dominated industrieslike e-commerce and healthcare.
Historic Surge in Job Applications
Women’s involvement in the workforce saw substantial growth, with 2.8 crore jobapplications, reflecting a 20% increase from 2023. Tier 1 cities such asDelhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru led with 1.52 crore applications, while Bhopaland Lucknow topped the list in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. This trend highlightsthe increasing opportunities beyond traditional metro cities. Furthermore, over5,000 women joined Apna daily in 2024, showing a stronger focus on empoweringwomen in meaningful careers. The report also noted a 28% rise in mediansalaries for women across sectors, alongside a 32% increase in applications formanagerial and leadership roles. Women excelled in industries like hospitality,logistics, healthcare, and retail, while their participation grew innon-traditional sectors such as sales and security services.

States like Hyderabad,Bengaluru, and Chennai contributed 62 lakh applications, while Bihar, Punjab,and Uttar Pradesh together accounted for 82 lakh applications.
SMB Sector Surge
The Small and Medium Business (SMB) sector emerged as a key driver of jobcreation, generating 9 lakh jobs in 2024, marking a 20% increase from theprevious year. Women’s participation in SMB job postings rose by 60%, andnearly 45% of SMBs adopted AI-driven hiring tools, reducing recruitment time by30% and cutting costs by 25%.
Balanced growth across regions saw cities like Indore, Surat, andVaranasi showing significant hiring activity, alongside metro cities such asDelhi-NCR and Mumbai.
Big Enterprises Expand HiringEfforts
Large enterprises like Bharti AXA, HDFC, Reliance Jio, and Aditya Birlaexpanded their hiring significantly in 2024, with job postings on Apnaincreasing by 32%. There was also a notable interest in regional talent, withTier 2 cities like Lucknow and Jaipur seeing a 1.5x rise, while Tier 3 citieslike Dehradun and Varanasi recorded a 3x increase in job postings.
