Cricket fans beware: Toyota Motor Corporation and a Fintech start-up are the new hopefuls to sponsor Team India after the exiting of Dream11. With the Online Gaming Bill passing, Dream11 has exited as the sponsor of the Indian cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is targeting Toyota and a fintech start-up to sponsor the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.
Dream11, India's biggest fantasy gaming platform, had landed the rights to be the main sponsor of the Indian cricket team in 2019 for a whopping amount of INR 120 crore ($16 million) for a period of four years. The deal expired last October and the brand, along with the BCCI, decided not to renew the deal.
With the Online Gaming Bill, 2021 passing in the Lok Sabha, which defines fantasy sports as a 'game of skill', Dream11 is unsure if they want to continue forward with the sponsorship, and the BCCI is moving on to bigger names.
The BCCI has reportedly approached the Toyota Motor Corporation and a Fintech start-up to take up the mantle for the Indian men's cricket team at the Asia Cup, which is to be held in the United Arab Emirates in 2025.
"There is a possibility that we might make an announcement (regarding team India sponsorship) before the commencement of the Asia Cup," a BCCI official said.
Will we witness a new era of cricketing sponsors? Only time will tell.
