Netanyahu's Warning and Yemen's Missile Strikes

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu warned on Tuesday of further retaliation if Yemen, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, retaliated to Israeli airstrikes on the Yemeni capital Sanaa. The warning follows a uptick in missile strikes towards Saudi Arabia, which neighbours Yemen, placing Israel in an awkward position. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Netanyahu is poised to return to power shortly, after a period of political instability.

In a televised address, Netanyahu claimed the airstrikes on Sanaa were intended to send a clear message to the Houthis. The group has previously targeted Israel with attacks on places belonging to Israeli tourists and diplomats. They have also reportedly offered to trade an Iranian soldier, who allegedly participated in the assassination of an Iranian-Jewish businessman, for 25 Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

The Israeli Prime Minister warned that any retaliation from the Houthis would be met by the Israeli Defence Forces. He said that, "We will operate determinedly, just as we do every day, against Iranian and Houthi efforts to infiltrate Israel and to entrench themselves near Israel's borders in Yemen, in Syria, and elsewhere."

This statement comes after Israel has been increasing its airstrikes in Syria, with aims to stop Iranian military buildup in the country. The Israeli army has also been conducting raids against Iranian targets in Syria, whom they view as a threat to Israeli security and a menace to the region.

The situation has prompted increased speculation over the consequences of a wider war involving Iran and Israel. Many observers have drawn parallels to the lead up to the 2003 Iraq War, with some fearing a regional conflict is looming.

Only time will tell whether the current tensions will escalate. As things stand, Netanyahu's warning is a sign of what may come.
