NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) leader Supriya Sule on Monday 8th of August 2022, alleged a massive scam in the Maharashtra governments flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana and called for a white paper and an independent inquiry into the scheme. The scheme, which aims to promote gender equality and women's empowerment by providing incentives to families who marry off their daughters, has been reportedly misused by officials, resulting in a loss of Rs 4,800 crore.
Sule, the daughter of NCP chief and former Union minister Sharad Pawar, alleged that the scam had taken place with the knowledge and patronage of the state government. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, she claimed that the investigation into the scam has been stifled by the state government and called for an impartial and transparent inquiry.
She stated, "This is not just a corruption scandal, it is an insult to every woman in Maharashtra. The state government needs to clarify why they are trying to protect the corrupt officials involved in this scam."
Sule's allegations come in the backdrop of increasing tensions within the MVA (Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi) alliance of the NCP, Shiv Sena, and Congress, as well as growing dissatisfaction with the state government's policies.
Her demands for an independent inquiry and transparency reflect the escalating political tensions in the state and the increasing pressure on the MVA government to address issues of corruption and gender inequality.
It remains to be seen how the state government will respond to these allegations and if the investigation will shed light on the alleged scam.
