LONDON (Reuters) – Prime Minister Keir Starmer has outlined an ambitious vision to establish the UK as a global artificial intelligence (AI) "superpower." He pledged a pro-innovation regulatory approach, improved access to public data for researchers, and the development of specialized zones for data centers.
Starmer emphasized the role of AI in driving economic growth, highlighting its potential to boost productivity by 1.5% annually, equating to an additional £47 billion ($57 billion) per year over a decade.
"Britain will be one of the great AI superpowers," Starmer said during a speech at University College London. "We will lead in breakthroughs, create wealth, and ensure AI benefits everyone across the country."
The UK, already the European leader in AI investment and ranked third globally behind the United States and China in AI patents and investment, plans to adopt a "pro-growth and pro-innovation" regulatory framework.
Starmer stressed the importance of independent regulation, referencing the country's departure from the European Union: "We will test and understand AI before regulating it, ensuring our approach is both proportionate and grounded."
This push comes as nations worldwide compete to become AI hubs, balancing technological growth with responsible governance.
