The Punjab government has announced plans to restore Jahaz Haveli, the historic residence of Diwan Todar Mal in Sirhind, as part of its commitment to preserving Punjab’s heritage. This restoration effort coincides with the annual Shaheedi Jor Mela, observed from December 25 to 27 in Fatehgarh Sahib. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan reaffirmed the Aam Aadmi Party government’s dedication to this project. But who was Diwan Todar Mal, and what role did he play in the story of Guru Gobind Singh’s younger sons?
Who Was Diwan Todar Mal?
Diwan Todar Mal, a wealthy merchant from Sirhind, is remembered for his association with the tragic martyrdom of Sahibzada Fateh Singh (9) and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh (7), the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the founder of the Khalsa. Historical records indicate that Todar Mal served as a revenue official under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan but lost his position under Aurangzeb.
In December 1704, the two Sahibzadas were executed by being bricked alive on the orders of Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor of Sirhind. Their grandmother, Mata Gujri, also passed away from shock upon hearing of their brutal deaths. Todar Mal’s legacy is tied to his unwavering devotion and efforts to honor their memory during these harrowing events.
