Muslims in Malaysia can attend celebrations without religious rituals, says the Chairman of the Muafakat Committee, National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI) Datuk Dr Nooh Gadot. This includes events like open house events or dinner gatherings, as long as the food served is halal and there is no entertainment or activities prohibited by Islamic law.
While MKI respects the beliefs of other religions, Nooh emphasizes that participating in any form of religious celebrations of other religions is against Islamic beliefs. He cites monotheism, violation of legal boundaries, and creating liberal thoughts without guidance from Islamic law as some of the negative consequences of such participation.
Nooh asks educational institutions, mosques, and the media to strengthen the proper education of faith to ensure faith is not undermined and religious sensitivity is preserved among the Muslim community in Malaysia.
The general public is advised to avoid participation in non-Islamic religious celebrations to prevent confusion, sparks polemics, and jeopardize the current harmony of Malaysia's multi-religious society.
"We must learn to respect one another's religions, but participating in other religious celebrations is bending the line between respect and participation."
