Even as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) alleged industrial flight from Andhra Pradesh, a leading industrial group has reportedly shown interest in setting up a steel plant in the state's Nellore district. According to reports, Jindal Steels plans to build a steel plant capable of producing 2.25 million tonnes of steel annually in Tamminapatnam and Momidi villages. The project is anticipated to come up for approval before the state investment promotion board in the near term.
Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL), part of the diversified O.P. Jindal Group, has already acquired a significant plot of land in the area. Back in 2019, the group purchased roughly 840 acres from the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (APIIC), which had originally planned to use it for a 1900-MW power plant.
The new steel plant would be a boost for the YSRC government, which has faced criticism for failing to attract investments and diversify its industrial portfolio. While the project's exact details are still unclear, reports suggest that it would directly employ 2500 people and create indirect work for 15,000 more.
The proposed plant's location near the Krishnapatnam port, railway station, and national highway is a key advantage. Furthermore, the state's government and investment departments are said to be ironing out the remaining details, hinting at a final investment decision soon.
This news may be a welcome development for the residents of Nellore, as the state's relatively new government searches for its footing in industrial development and employment generation.
