The recent tragic stampede that caused the deaths of 11 people at two separate public meetings held by the Telugu Desam Party President N. Chandrababu Naidu has prompted the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party government in Andhra Pradesh to issue a prohibitory order under the Police Act.
The state government has banned large gatherings and processions on roads, including national highways, as they cause great inconvenience to the public and have proven to lead to injuries and deaths. The order explicitly states that permission for public meetings should only be considered in rare and exceptional cases and alternative locations suggested by the police should be non-obstructive to traffic on public roads and ensure the safety of commuters and event attendees.
The ruling YSRCP party has placed the blame for the deaths of the 11 people on Naidu, with State Tourism Minister RK Roja alleging that the former chief minister deliberately held the rally in a narrow lane to demonstrate the size of his crowd, thus causing the stampede.
Naidu responded by stating that it was the responsibility of the police to ensure that proper safety measures were in place during such events and that he was not blaming anyone, but rather felt that the police should have taken the necessary precautionary measures.
