A prominent opposition lawyer in Nellore, who was arrested for allegedly spreading false reports and creating fear through social media, has shocked observers by claiming that the alleged facts don't add up in the incident that led to his arrest.

Rajesh Gurrapu, a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and well-known lawyer in the district court of Nellore, was arrested after a student died by suicide allegedly after listening to a fake audio message about the re-emergence of Coronavirus in the district.

The police said that Gurrapu was responsible for circulating the fake audio message on WhatsApp, creating panic, and allegedly causing the student's suicide. However, Gurrapu's family and colleagues deny the allegations and say that the police version of events doesn't add up.

Speaking to the media from prison, Gurrapu said, "I am a lawyer with a good reputation. I verify the facts before forwarding any information. I never wanted to cause any panic or fear."

Gurrapu's family has filed a complaint with the police alleging that their family member is being framed.
