Civic polls hopefuls file stacks of papers

The first day of filing nomination papers for the January 18 civic polls in Andhra Pradesh witnessed a modest turnout of candidates, with nearly half the spots being uncontested.

As many as 16 candidates filed their nomination papers on Wednesday, including 12 from the ruling YSR Congress Party and two from Jana Sena Party, according to The Hindu.

Another 12 were independents.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) appeared to be inching towards an alliance with the Communist Party of India (CPM) for the polls to the Nellore Municipal Corporation.

Senior TDP leaders met with CPM leaders to discuss allocation of divisions, the report said.

However, there was no official word on the nature of the possible alliance.

In Nellore, the report added, the YSRC candidates filed three nominations for the 18th ward, followed by two each for the 1st, 6th, 9th and 21st wards and one each for the 5th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 16th wards.

The TDP and Congress fielded one candidate each for the 19th and 18th wards, respectively.

The election is slated for January 18.

The ruling YSRC is looking to retain power in Nellore, while the TDP is hoping to make a comeback.

The Congress, which ruled the corporation for three terms in the past, is expected to finish behind the two parties.
