Jawad Disrupts normalcy in Nellore District

The recent weather system Jawad caused havoc in Nellore district, resulting in disruptions to both road and rail traffic to southern parts of the country. The railway track on the Nellore-Padugupadu section suffered a breach, leading to the cancellation of 18 trains to the south and the diversion of 10 long-distance trains to other destinations. Over 3,500 passengers traveling by train from Howrah, Puri, and other destinations were stranded in areas such as Kavali, Ongole, and Chirala.

The arterial Chennai-Kolkata highway was breached at several locations, leaving vehicles stranded for 12 hours until officials restored traffic. In addition to the efforts of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the district police evacuated 44,275 people to 97 relief camps.

The worst affected was Islampeta, where over 12,000 people were relocated to relief camps due to floodwaters entering their homes. The district administration is providing flood-affected people with 25 kg of rice, 1 kg of palm oil, red gram, onions, and potatoes. Officials are set to conduct a detailed enumeration of losses from Monday.

Despite the devastation caused by Jawad, the Penna river, which was in spate due to peak flood levels of 5.5 lakh cusecs due to heavy rains in Kadapa, Anantapur, and Chittoor districts, subdued by the evening, aiding in declining inflow into the Somasila reservoir to 1.56 lakh cusecs.

Officials maintained a flood cushion of 8.70 tmcft and discharged 1.44 lakh cusecs of water from the Somasila reservoir, which currently has 69.30 tmcft of water.
