In another setback to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), corporators from the party are leaving in droves and joining the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). This comes in the wake of Operation Akarsh, a recent initiative launched by TDP MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy.
Except for Nellore Mayor Potluru Sravanthi and Deputy Mayor Khaleel Ahmed, who are expected to run as YSRCP nominees in the 2024 elections, sources indicate that all the other corporators are gearing up to leave the YSRCP behind and join the TDP soon. The YSRCP reportedly set a record by winning all 54 divisions in the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections held in 2021.
However, after the party's defeat in the recent state assembly elections, a whooping 20 corporators have already defected from the YSRCP, and many more are expected to follow suit before the end of October. They are reportedly attracted by the Operation Akarsh, which promises to fulfill their political ambitions. A senior YSRCP corporator stated that they have no choice but to join the TDP, as they have not received any support from the YSRCP leadership despite their overwhelming victory in the NMC elections.
The constituency reorganization of 2009 placed 26 NMC divisions in the Nellore rural constituency and 28 in the Nellore city constituency. The YSRCP won in all 54 divisions during the November 2021 municipal elections. The TDP's Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy and the YSRCP's Poluboyina Anil Kumar Yadav reportedly played a crucial role in this victory.
However, after Sridhar Reddy defected to the TDP, nine corporators followed suit, abandoning the YSRCP. Now, many more are expected to follow before the end of this month. It is reported that the YSRCP corporators are unhappy with the lack of support from their party's leadership.
