In a bid to enhance safety for women and make travel more accessible to them, the Nellore district administration and APSRTC are set to introduce CCTV surveillance and body-worn cameras for conductors from Friday, August 15. The decision, which coincides with the commencement of the Stree Shakti scheme, is expected to help prevent any incidents and ensure smooth RTC operations in the region.

The state government will launch the free travel scheme on Independence Day, with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurating it in Vijayawada. Meanwhile, in Nellore, urban development minister Ponguru Narayana will launch the programme at 3pm in the main bus station, in the presence of district collector Anand and APSRTC zonal chairman Sannapureddy Suresh Reddy.

Women, girls, and transgenders can travel for free anywhere within the state in these services by showing their Aadhaar, voter ID, or any other government-issued ID, according to District Public Transport Officer Shameem. Zero-fare tickets will be issued to them upon showing the applicable concession at the seven depots. These depots will operate a total of 492 buses, including Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, and Express services. The initiative is set to provide accessible and safe travel for women in the region, with local MLAs and public representatives also encouraged to participate in the inaugural programmes at all depots.
