The Andhra Pradesh government launches its first Trupthi Canteen in Nellore, with the aim of empowering women and promoting eco-friendly practices. This novel initiative falls under the Smart Street Programme, in collaboration with the SaRa Project. The canteen operates as a model for generating income for women while serving affordable and nutritious food to the public.
The Trupthi Canteen is a joint initiative of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and the SaRa Project. The canteen recently opened at the Atmakur Bus Stand Centre, and its early success is already encouraging expansions into more locations across the district.
Each unit operates from a small 20x12 container, employing four women who are trained in both kitchen skills and business operations. The Surya Ghar Scheme powers the canteen's appliances with solar energy, emphasizing the project's eco-ustainable goals.
The aim is to open 700 Trupthi Canteens across the state, which will engage 3,000 women affiliated with MEPMA. Each canteen directly employs four women and generates additional indirect employment, with each entrepreneur earning at least Rs 30,000 per month.
Radhamma, Project Director of MEPMA, estimates a turnover of Rs 6.39 lakh per canteen, with expenses of Rs 3.92 lakh, thus generating a net income of Rs 2.46 lakh. Despite the income generation, the canteen keeps its prices affordable to ensure meal accessibility.
This pioneering project not only promotes economic opportunities for self-help group women but also helps them sustain their livelihoods. The total investment is estimated at Rs 16.40 lakh per canteen. The four woman partners each contribute Rs 3.10 lakh, totaling Rs 12 lakh, while MEPMA and the SaRa Project cover the remaining amount.
Media Comment:
"This pioneering initiative is a positive step towards empowering women in Nellore. The government's partnership with the SaRa Project has demonstrated a commitment to not only economic growth but also sustainability. We can hopefully look forward to more initiatives that combine these two aspects in the future."
