Andhra farmers are switching to natural farming methods across 222 villages in the Nellore district. This movement has caught the attention of the local agriculture department and officials in the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming, who aim to expand these practices and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
According to recent data, there are 53,764 farmers in Nellore who cultivate 18 different types of crops on 67,356 acres of land using natural farming methods. In recent years, there has been a marked shift towards natural farming, with consumers increasingly interested in buying and using organic products. Some farmers who made the switch to natural farming methods years ago have reported that their cultivation costs have decreased by up to 50%, and their yields have doubled compared to when they used chemical fertilizers. Now, women farmers are also getting involved, cultivating diverse crops such as paddy, sorghum, ragi, black gram, red gram, green gram, sesame, Bengal gram, coriander, millets, and vegetables.
Andhra farmers are increasingly turning to natural farming methods to capitalize on the growing demand for organic products and reduce their cultivation costs. Officials at the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming are encouraging farmers to practice natural farming on a larger scale.
