Aqua farmers reap the rewards of booming shrimp prices

A sudden spike in shrimp prices has brought relief and joy to aqua farmers in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, with one farmer estimating a 50% increase in sales over the past two months. This news is a long time coming, as the 40,000 farmers who rely on aqua culture for employment have been struggling in the face of rising fertilizer and feed prices. Fortunately, 90-95% of their produce is exported to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and North America, where demand has been robust, leading to a corresponding increase in price.

The farmers have started to see the benefits of mixed farming, cultivating both shrimp and fish in the same ponds. The increased biodiversity means a higher chance of profitability for these farmers, who can now expect revenues of up to 12,000-13,000 crore this year.

With such promising news for the local economy, one can only hope that this rise in shrimp prices continues and that aqua culture continues to be a viable livelihood for the 40,000 residents of Nellore who depend on it.
