Following complaints of intimidation and illegal arrest, CPM State Committee has strongly condemned the NDA government's actions in Nellore district. The condemnation was specifically regarding the forced acquisition of land from farmers in Karedu village by the Indosol Company.
Officials from the revenue department were sent to Karedu to collect personal details from the villagers, including Aadhaar and revenue documents. When the locals resisted, the authorities resorted to threats and arrested farmer leader Kumar, agricultural worker leaders Pullayya and G Venkateswarlu. They were arrested and taken to Ulavapadu police station.
The CPM demanded an immediate halt to the repression and condemned the government's use of Section 30 of the Police Act in Ulavapadu to create fear and suppress dissent. They accused the government of attempting to seize land illegally, disregarding a gram sabha resolution opposing the acquisition for the establishment of the unit.
The incident highlights the increasing disregard for farmers' rights and raises questions about the government's commitment to protecting their interests. The situation in Karedu village has sparked concern among communities across India, where similar situations are becoming a sadly familiar occurrence.
Jagadish, a local farmer, highlighted that "It's ironic that we, the farmers, are accused of 'terrorism' for resisting the seizure of our own land. We're simply fighting to survive."
The incident has also called into question the role of the revenue officials, who are allegedly complicit in the harassment and intimidation of the locals.
Authorities have yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
