Emu farming thrives in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a steady rise in emu farming, with the Nellore District Emu Farmers Association (NDEFA) now boasting 25 members, who continue to farm the birds due to the good profits.

The association's secretary, D. Prabhakar Reddy, noted that apart from their eggs, emu mutton, and oil also has a growing market, as the meat is healthy and the oil has medicinal value.

Moreover, all parts of the bird are profitable for farmers, from the egg stage onwards. One emu egg costs Rs1,500, with the birds laying 15 to 20 eggs once every 18 months across their 40-year lifespan. Emu mutton sells for Rs350 per kg, while a chick older than three months fetches Rs5,000.

An adult emu bird weighs approximately 40 kg, with four to five kg of oil extractable from each bird. High market demand makes the oil particularly lucrative, as it has medicinal and therapeutic value.

At present, a pair of adult emu birds brings farmers roughly Rs50,000. Given the increasing demand, farmers are keen to meet local needs for emu mutton, with few facilities available to process the meat.

Emu birds are fed 1kg of feed daily, consisting of a mixture of maize corn, cotton seed, and soya. With the demand growing, returns are also sufficient, and the market is now extending to other states, with buyers seeking all emu products.

Reddy, who farms nearly 400 emus at Ramapuram village in Kodavalur mandal, sees the demand steadily increasing. Now, they are gaining traction with consumers from other states. He hopes to expand his business further in the future.
