Smart Cities Missing Out on Nellore's Potential

Despite initially missing out on significant funding as a national smart city project two years ago, the city of Nellore is now set to benefit from substantial investment in infrastructure.

Drinking water infrastructure in particular is set to receive a boost with a 557 crore augmented drinking water supply scheme, which is currently 75% complete and due for completion in July. This will increase the supply of water from the current 85 MLD (million litres per day) to 185 MLD by 2048, with the remaining demand met from local sources. The existing population of 6.5 lakh is expected to rise to 14 lakh by 2048 and the infrastructure is being designed to meet future requirements for the next 30 years.

As well as this, a 122 MLD capacity water treatment plant has been developed at Mohammadapuram as part of the project, and a 580-crore underground drainage project is also underway to accommodate for the city's growing needs.

The Housing and Urban Development Corperation Ltd (HUDCO), a public sector undertaking, provided 90% of the loan for the project while the civic body generated the remaining 10% funds.

With other infrastructure developments also underway, including a 33 crore beginning to develop Nellore into a smart city, the city's potential is beginning to be recognised.
