77th Army Day Parade Pune Hosts Historic Celebration for the First Time

The Army Day Parade, a key event in India’s military calendar, will take place in Pune for the first time on 15 January 2025. This parade commemorates the appointment of Field Marshal K M Cariappa as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. Traditionally held in Delhi, the event has been rotating across cities since 2023 to foster greater local engagement with the Armed Forces. Pune, with its deep military ties as home to the Southern Command Headquarters and the National Defence Academy, has been chosen to host this prestigious event.

History of Army Day: Indian Army Day is celebrated annually on 15 January. This date marks the founding of the Indian Army and the transfer of military leadership to Indian hands after independence. While the day was initially observed on 1 April 1895, it was later moved to honour the contributions and sacrifices of Indian soldiers. The celebration aims to instil patriotism and respect for the Armed Forces among citizens.

Significance of the Parade: The Army Day Parade is a national celebration that highlights the bravery, dedication, and technological progress of the Indian Army. It underscores the military’s unwavering commitment to national security and fosters a strong bond between the Armed Forces and civilians. The parade allows communities to witness the Army’s strength and innovation, featuring marching contingents, mechanised units, and advanced defence technologies.

The 2025 Parade Highlights: The 2025 parade will be hosted at the Bombay Engineering Group and Centre in Pune. Highlights of the event include combat demonstrations, martial arts performances, and an exhibition of cutting-edge military technology such as drones and robotics. The theme for the 77th Army Day celebration, “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena” (Empowered India, Capable Army), reflects the Army’s strength and commitment to the nation.

Participation and Access: For the first time, the Indian Army has introduced a digital seat-booking system for the parade. The ADP 25 app, available on iOS and Android, enables residents to register for attendance. Aadhaar-linked verification and a face scan ensure secure and streamlined access for attendees.
