Flooding Ganeshas and traffic woes as Hyderabad prepares for biggest idol

In view of the upcoming Khairatabad Bada Ganesh installation, the Hyderabad Traffic Police have announced a series of traffic diversions to ease vehicular movement and facilitate devotees. The restrictions will be in place from August 27 to September 6, every day from 11 a.m. till late at night, depending on the crowd of visitors.

Police said congestion is expected at Khairatabad, Shadan College, Nirankari, Old PS Saifabad, Mint Compound, and Necklace Rotary due to the heavy influx of devotees. Commuters have been advised to avoid these stretches and plan alternative routes.

Authorities also urged devotees to make use of Metro Rail, MMTS, and RTC buses instead of private vehicles. Those visiting from the same locality have been encouraged to carpool to reduce congestion.

This year, the civic body has spent about Rs. 5 lakh on the installation, excluding the costs of the idol and other religious items. A massive 20-ft-tall idol of Ganesh will be installed at the Khairatabad Ganesh Templestarting Tuesday.

An idol immersion queue management system will be implemented for the first time this year. The Hyderabad Police have announced that 153 teams of 300 officials will be deployed to monitor the Ganesh idols in different sizes at various locations across the city.

A control room will be set up at the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate to monitor the entire process. A team of the Hyderabad City Police's Rapid Action Force (RAF) will be deployed for the installation of the Khairatabad Ganesh idol.

On the last day of the festival, the idol will be immersed in the Hussain Sagar lake, following a procession expected to draw a huge number of devotees.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have appealed to the public to extend full cooperation by following the traffic advisory.

"We request the citizens not to obstruct the traffic and cooperate with the police to ensure smooth flow of traffic," the advisory said.
