IN THE CROSSWALK, NOT A CROSSHAIR TRACKING SYSTEM

Pedestrian safety is becoming a larger concern for Hyderabad officials as the city's commercial core expands and pedestrian activity increases. In response, the Hyderabad Traffic Police have undertaken several initiatives to prioritize safe crossing infrastructure.

Thus far in 2022, the Traffic Police have booked over 49,000 cases for obstructive parking as part of their Removal of Obstructive Parking & Encroachments (ROPE) drive. They have also booked more than 51,500 violations and over 31,000 wheel clamp cases. Notably, the police also emphasized the importance of traffic wardens at 31 pelican signals, who ensure the signals are properly functioning and guide pedestrians across roads.

To further protect pedestrians, the police have set up 71 sign boards at busy junctions and metro station footover bridges, urging people to use pedestrian islands to cross the road. The local traffic officers identify junctions that require Zebra Crossings/Stop Lines and facilitate their installation.

According to the police, these initiatives are helping to reduce pedestrian fatalities through traffic regulation, enforcement, and engineering interventions. Officials urge pedestrians to take advantage of these safer crossing points and remain vigilant while doing so.
