Elderly couple loses Rs 88L to cybercriminals posing as police

Cybercriminals posing as police officers have swindled an elderly couple out of Rs 88 lakh. The victims, a retired sessions court assistant clerk and his wife, were conned into believing they were implicated in fictitious money laundering and narcotics trafficking cases. Over 40 days, the couple sent significant amounts from their assets to the scammers' accounts.

The couple, aged 69 and 64, filed a complaint with the Cybercrime police station on July 8, detailing how they had been contacted by someone claiming to be from the telecoms department, who directed them to a follow-up call from "Sunilkumar Gautam" of the Delhi crime branch. The crime branch caller alleged that a bank manager had been arrested in connection with a money laundering case and that illicit funds had been transferred into the couple's account.

They were also sent photographs of the "arrested manager," and the caller threatened them with imprisonment unless they cooperated. The couple were told to deposit Rs 8 lakh to a certain bank account to verify the funds. They were assured that the money would be returned, but it never was. After being persuaded to withdraw money from their gold jewelry and bank accounts, the couple transferred a total of Rs 88.50 lakh to the cybercriminals.

On August 18, the couple lodged a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, followed by a formal FIR at Cybercrime police station on August 24. In subsequent investigations, police arrested three men from Bhavnagar alleged to have rented their bank accounts to the cybercriminals. The investigation into the masterminds is ongoing.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of elderly people to cyber scams and the sophistication of criminal methods. With the case, police warn the public to be vigilant against scams and to report any suspicious activity promptly.
