Tragedy at Antioch High School: Student Shooting Leaves One Dead, Community in Mourning

On January 22, 2025, a devastating shooting occurred at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, leaving a 16-year-old female student, Josselin Corea Escalante, dead and another student injured. The shooter, identified as 17-year-old Solomon Henderson, was also a student at the school. After targeting students in the cafeteria, Henderson tragically turned the gun on himself.

The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria, where Henderson reportedly confronted Escalante before opening fire. One student sustained a graze wound and was treated at a hospital, while another suffered a facial injury during the ensuing chaos. Metro Nashville Police confirmed that two school resource officers were present in the building but were not in the immediate vicinity of the cafeteria when the shooting occurred. By the time they arrived, the gunman had already taken his own life.

Following the shooting, Antioch High School was placed on lockdown as law enforcement secured the area. Parents were directed to a reunification site at a nearby hospital rather than approaching the school directly. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined local authorities in investigating the incident. Officials are currently working to determine Henderson’s motive and are examining online writings linked to him for further insights.

The tragedy has left the Antioch High School community in shock and grief. Parents and students expressed their fears and concerns about safety in schools. Many highlighted the absence of metal detectors at Antioch High School as a potential vulnerability. One parent noted that their child had heard gunfire from another floor but was unharmed, while others shared their anxiety as they waited for updates outside the school.

In response to this heartbreaking event, United Family Fellowship church hosted a vigil to provide space for community members to grieve, pray, and seek comfort. This shooting comes nearly two years after another deadly school shooting in Nashville that reignited debates over gun control laws in Tennessee.

As investigations continue, the community is grappling with how to move forward from this senseless act of violence. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about school safety and gun violence in educational institutions across the country. For now, Antioch High School mourns the loss of one of its students while supporting those affected by this tragic event.
