The investigation began after the police received a complaint on November 13, 2019, from a victim who accused the suspects of targeting her after she made a purchase on a prominent e-commerce website. Deceived by this false win, the victim was induced to transfer INR 2.3 lakhs as payment for various charges to claim the prize, siphoned into multiple bank accounts allegedly operated by the suspects.

The investigation uncovered that the primary suspect, Sandeep, had purchased databases and bulk message services from Tausif Ahmed and Vikas Kumar. Additionally, Manikchand Paswan, the prime accused's relative, aided in reaching out to vulnerable individuals and extracting money from them. The police confiscated multiple artefacts, including 12 mobile phones, 2 laptops, a car, fake identification documents, and 19 SIM cards tied to the accused. This swift action by the Cyber Crime police sends a strong warning to potential cybercriminals.
