Indian Flag Bearers Dharambir and Preeti Pal Headline Para Athletics Championships

New Delhi will play host to the World Para Athletics Championships in February, and local fans will have a couple of familiar faces to cheer on during the opening ceremony.

Dharambir and Preeti Pal have been named the flag bearers for the Indian team, which consists of a 73-member delegation. Both Dharambir and Preeti are wheelchair athletes and will look to lead by example as they take center stage at the prestigious event.

This will be the first time India has hosted a World Para Athletics Championships, which takes place every two years and alternates between indoor and outdoor championships. Hosted by the Paralympic Committee of India, the tournament will take place from February 7-16 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"It is a moment of pride for the Paralympic fraternity that India is hosting the World Championships for the first time. We have a good team, and we are hoping for some medals," Paralympic Committee of India president Raja Randhir Singh was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

Dharambir and Preeti will look to lead the Indian team, hoping to capture the momentum and inspire the home crowd with their presence.

The pair, both hailing from Haryana, have been stalwarts of the Indian para athletics community, and their appointment as flag bearers is a testament to their achievements.

Dharambir, a para-badminton player from Sonipat, has numerous accolades to his name, including a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, as well as a pair of gold medals at the 2017 and 2019 World Para Badminton Championships.

Meanwhile, Preeti, who calls Rohtak home, has dominated the para powerlifting scene in India, having won the women's lightweight category at the national championships held in February of last year.

Both athletes have served as inspiration for the next generation of para athletes in India, and their leadership roles at the World Para Athletics Championships will surely foster more success for the Indian team.
