Two Kerala Truck Drivers Remand in Custody in France Over Cocaine Haul

Kerala natives Disny D Joseph and Antony Shaji are grappling with a drug scandal that has landed them in jail in France. Their families plead innocence on their behalf, claiming that they were merely transporting fruit from Spain to France. This drug scandal comes just months after another Kerala man, Binu Varkey, was caught with 1.5 tonnes of cocaine in his ship off the coast of Scotland.

Last Tuesday, French police arrested two Kerala natives in the city of Toulouse. The officers had reason to believe the two men were hauling drugs. Upon searching the truck they had been driving, the police found 147 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment.

The men, Disny D Joseph, 21, and Antony Shaji, 22, have been behind bars since their arrest, and the French police have now charged them with drug trafficking. The men's lawyer, Caroline Bourrat, has said that her clients claimed to be innocent and unaware that they were transporting cocaine.

Families of Disny and Antony plead innocence on their behalf, stating that the men were merely following the instructions of their Spanish employer to transport fruit from Spain to France. They claim that the men had no idea there were drugs hidden in the secret compartment of the truck.

This incident sheds light on the increasingly prevalent role that Kerala natives are playing in the international drug trade. Only months ago, another Kerala man, Binu Varkey, made headlines when 1.5 tonnes of cocaine were found in his ship off the coast of Scotland.

The French authorities are taking these drug trafficking claims very seriously and will continue to investigate this case.
