Man killed, seven injured in stampede at Telugu political event

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the seven people who died in a stampede at a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) political meeting in Andhra Pradesh. "Pained by the mishap at a public meeting in Nellore, AP. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," Modi tweeted.

"An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs 50,000," his office added in a tweet.

The stampede occurred at the public meeting held by TDP leader and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Kandukuru, Nellore district, on Wednesday. Seven TDP workers died after a scuffle broke out between workers, according to police. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.

"7 people have lost their lives, injured admitted to hospital," the police said.

Following the incident, Naidu announced that he would provide financial assistance of Rs 10 lakhs each to the families of the deceased. He also said that the children of those who died in the incident would be educated in NTR Trust educational institutions, according to ANI.
