Recent Security Drills Highlight Ongoing Tensions

Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, security drills are being conducted across India to ensure safety. After the Central Railway conducted a mock drill at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, authorities in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district conducted searches at the Nellore Railway Station. The checks were aimed at inspecting the station area, platforms, and train coaches.

On April 22, 2022, 26 people were killed in the Pahalgam attack, and the government has vowed to punish the perpetrators. The drill in Mumbai involved over 100 personnel from various security forces, including the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Maharashtra Security Force (MSF), and Home Guards. The forces worked jointly to conduct thorough checks across the entire CST station. Similarly, the Nellore Railway Station drill involved the Dog Squad, GRP team, and Santhapeta police, who searched every platform, train, and the station area.

The Central Railway CPRO explained that strong security protocols are always in place at major transport hubs like CST. The mock drills are to ensure that they are ready for any eventuality, he said. Union Home Ministry had asked states to conduct mock drills to test preparedness and effectiveness in the event of a hostile attack.

It remains to be seen what comes next as the country continues to be on high alert. comments
