Land Grab In Rachakonda District Highlights Ongoing Corruption Challenges In Southern India

A 5 crore land scam has been uncovered in Rachakonda district, with eight individuals having been arrested thus far for forging documents to sell open plots. These criminals were fraudulently assuming ownership of properties through the fabrication of false certificatesincluding fake death and legal heir documentsto the tune of tens of millions of rupees.

The gang's methodology involved identifying unfenced plots and posing as owners. They would then forge a range of certificates to establish themselves as the rightful owners or heirs of these properties. In one instance, they created fake death certificates for a plot owner and his wife before fabricating a legal heir certificate to enable the transfer of ownership. In another case, the group prepared a special power of attorney to suggest that the real landowner had moved abroad.

Those arrested include Beegudem Aravind, a bike mechanic; Sampangi Suresh and Eega Hari Prasad, both involved in the real estate industry; Chekkala Somnath, a real estate dealer; Kotla Nagendra Prasad, a freelance loans broker; Mir Mohammed Hussain, a graphic designer and Rapido rider; Yamjala Shekar, a private employee from Ibrahimpatnam; and Veramachineni Vanaja, a resident of Vijayawada.

Many of the accused have prior criminal histories, with multiple cases of cheating and forgery since 2009. The police have seized laptops, printers, a polymer machine, scanners, fake stamp pads, fabricated property documents, and chemicals used in forgery, as well as a car and seven mobile phones.

This case shines a light on the ongoing corruption and bureaucratic challenges in India, particularly in Southern India, which often sees administrative loopholes and corruption scandals.

The Rachakonda Police have pledged to eradicate such malpractices and warned the public against involving themselves in or facilitating fraudulent document creation. They have advised property buyers to verify documents before purchasing and have promised to take strict legal action against all individuals involved in illegal activities.
