Shami and Manishi's outstanding performances limit North Zone to 308/6 on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy as Ayush Badoni's stylish 63 impresses.
Mohammed Shami was instrumental in limiting North Zone to 308 for six wickets on the first day of the Duleep Trophy final against East Zone at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Shami, who recently returned to the Test team following a impressive showing in the ODI series against South Africa, took two crucial wickets, including that of opener Akhil Herwadkar for a duck. Herwadkar's opening partner, Nitish Kumar, also couldn't get going, as he was sent back to the pavilion for 4 runs by Shami's bowling partner, Manishi.
Manishi was the standout bowler for East Zone, taking three wickets for 57 runs off his 14 overs, including the crucial scalp of Raman Lamba (72) just after the latter reached his half-century. Lamba, alongside Ayush Badoni (63), had been the driving force for North Zone's steady start, recovering from a shaky 17/2 after the loss of openers Akhil Herwadkar and Nitish Kumar. However, Lamba eventually fell victim to Manishi, and his dismissal sparked a collapse from which North Zone never fully recovered.
Badoni, however, stood tall amid the chaos. The 23-year-old, who has played three ODIs for India, anchored the North Zone innings with confident batting, finding the boundary 11 times during his 117-ball stay at the crease. Despite the regular fall of wickets at the other end, Badoni continued to frustrate the East Zone bowlers, taking the attack to them during the final few overs of the day's play. His patient innings finally came to an end in the final over of the day, with East Zone claiming three wickets in four balls to end the day in command of the contest.
The day certainly belonged to Shami and Manishi, though, as they delivered impressive performances to give East Zone a promising start to the final. With two days left to play, the match is wide open, with both teams eager to claim the Duleep Trophy.
