Zohran Mamdani May Not Have Easier Path to NYC Mayor Compared to Andrew Cuomo

Even though progressive organizer Zohran Mamdani has surged to the top of the crowded field in the latest poll of potential New York City mayoral candidates, the same survey suggests that Cuomo would beat him in a general election face-off.

The latest survey from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling showed that 41% of respondents backed Mamdani, who is of Tanzanian Indian descent, compared to 20% for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg and 19% for New York State Attorney General Letitia James. No other candidate crossed double digits.

However, when respondents were asked whom they would vote for in a hypothetical match-up between Mamdani and Cuomo, the current governor held a 54%-44% lead. That was despite the fact that Cuomo who is weathering a series of scandals and is himself mulling a run for mayor has not yet publicly declared his intentions for 2023.

PPT noted that Bragg and James would be stronger general election candidates than Mamdani, with "brighter futures ahead of them in a hypothetical match-up against Cuomo."

Bragg's team argued that the district attorney's top issues criminal justice reform and addressing gun violence are the key concerns of voters in the August primary.

"As the survey confirms, New Yorkers are increasingly worried about public safety and crime, which are foundational issues in the DA's race," said Bragg campaign manager Danielle Holley in a statement.

Will Bredderman, Cuomo's spokesman, responded to the polling with a simple statement: "We aren't playing polls until we officially declare."

Primary voting will take place on August 29, 2023, with the general election occurring on November 7, 2023.

Conclusion:

Zohran Mamdani's path to New York City Mayor might be more complicated than initially anticipated, with polling data suggesting that while he is ahead in the race for the Democratic nomination, he would lose to Cuomo in a general election face-off. As the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling notes, Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg would be stronger general election candidates than Mamdani. The survey also suggests that Bragg and James would be brighter futures in a hypothetical match-up against Cuomo. It remains to be seen whether Bragg and James will indeed prove to be strong contenders in the coming months.
