India's men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and psychologist Paddy Upton are focusing on improving the team's mental strength ahead of the all-important Asia Cup, which begins on October 11. The Asia Cup is the flagship event for India as they seek World Cup qualification.
"The objective is to be No.1 in Asia, and to do that we have to beat the best, and that opportunity comes at the Asia Cup," Fulton was quoted as saying by the Asian Age. "There is no doubt that the Asia Cup is the flagship event for us, it is the most important thing at this moment, and we are ready for it," he added.
Fulton's efforts to make the team mentally tougher have so far been well-received, says Singh, who believes the team has been making rapid progress under the guidance of the Australia-born coach.
"The biggest change that I have seen is that we have become mentally stronger under Fulton," said Singh. "He has helped us become a tighter unit, and the improvements are visible."
India are placed in a group along with Oman, South Korea, and Pakistan at the Asia Cup. They begin their campaign against South Korea on October 11.
