US Warns G7, Netanyahu Considers Preemptive Strike
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has alerted G7 nations about a potential attack on Israel by Iran and Hezbollah as early as Monday. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a preemptive strike. This decision followed a high-level meeting with Mossad, Shin Bet, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.
Escalation of Hostilities
The situation has intensified following Israel's assassination of senior Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, which also killed five civilians. Hezbollah, backed by Iran, vowed to escalate attacks deep into Israeli territory. The assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, attributed to Israel, has further fueled the tensions. Since October 7, 2023, over 1,700 rockets have been fired from Lebanon into Israel, killing 15 Israelis and injuring more than 150.
Regional Implications and Evacuations
As tensions mount, several countries, including the US, UK, and France, have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon. The US has urged Iran to de-escalate, warning that any attack would be met with a response. The prospect of an all-out regional war looms large, with fears that the conflict could spread to multiple fronts, involving Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah.
Diplomatic Efforts to Avert War
Despite efforts by the US and European partners to prevent escalation, Iran has remained resolute, refusing to share detailed plans for the attack. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi is currently in Tehran for talks aimed at defusing the situation. The urgency is palpable as the possibility of a major conflict in the Middle East grows.
