Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister Mekapati Goutam Reddy has been touring flood-hit areas of Sangam mandal in Nellore district, promising villagers that a new bridge will be built and house pattas will be provided. Reddy took a boat trip to Veerlagudipadu to listen to locals' grievances and oversee emergency food and other relief efforts.
Noting that the Penna River had not seen such a high water flow since 1995, he urged officials to ensure that aid reached victims promptly.
Reddy's visit came after the confluence of the Pincha, Cheyyeru, and Swarnamukhi rivers dramatically increased water levels in the Penna, causing flooding.
Officials said that, at present, 4.5 lakh cusecs of water was flowing in the river, forcing evacuations and emergency relief efforts.
The minister assured villagers that his ministry would act to ensure the flood's impact was mitigated.
