The State Commission for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Kerala, has announced that it will begin providing free self-defence training to young women in the state to empower and protect them from violence and sexual assault. This comes in the wake of a rising number of reported sexual offences in the state.
The commission has partnered with several NGOs and government bodies to promote this initiative, namely the Kerala Women's Commission, and to organize workshops and training sessions across the state. These sessions will be headed by experts in martial arts and self-defence, and all participating women will be certified upon completion of the training.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Commissioner Rejikumar K. stated that "Women in Kerala and across the world face countless challenges to their safety and dignity every day. It is our duty to equip them with the tools and skills to navigate these obstacles and be confident in their abilities to defend themselves. We hope that this initiative will be the first step towards creating a safer and more secure state for all women to live and thrive in."
The program aims to reach at least 5000 women in its inaugural year, and with rising popularity, the commission expects many more women to come forward and participate in the sessions.
