Elderly man extorted of Rs 33.4L in devastating cybercrime episode

Cybercrime in India is skyrocketing, and Hyderabad has recently logged an alarming case of digital arrest extortion. As per the Hyderabad cybercrime unit, a 73-year-old man from Bowenpally was duped of a staggering Rs 33.4 lakhs by fraudsters posing as inspectors from the Karnataka crime branch.

The victim, in his complaint, stated that the ordeal began on July 25 when the fraudster contacted him and warned that his Aadhar card was linked to serious crimes involving obscene content and human trafficking. The fraudster sent fake legal documents to support his claims and coerced the victim and his wife to remain silent.

Later, another fraudster impersonating a police officer contacted the victim and demanded Rs 15 lakh for fund verification, which was just the start. The victim was extorted repeatedly under various pretexts, and the criminals amped up the deception by sending fake documents from the Supreme Court and Income Tax Department.

Finally, the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter after the victim filed a complaint. This incident is a chilling reminder of the sophistication of cybercriminals and how vulnerable we all are to cybercrime.
