Gaza: Children and Women Starving; Expert Pleads with Netanyahu

Feeding a nation is a daunting task, but what happens when the people in power fail to do so, and with an already oppressed and neglected community? This is the case for many women and children in Gaza, who are now starving as a result.

According to the World Food Programme (WFP) a United Nations agency dedicated to fighting hunger on Thursday the situation regarding food scarcity in the Gaza Strip is critical. It's evident that there isn't enough food there, and this is especially dire for those who are most vulnerable that is, women and children.

The WFP head, David Beasley, stated that he personally visited Gaza this week and saw the dire conditions firsthand. Beasley commented that he spoke with mothers who were "dying inside" as they watched their children suffer from malnutrition and hunger. He added that the lack of food and low wages are a deadly combination, one that puts Gaza's residents at risk of famine.

The WFP aims to assist 230,000 women and children in Gaza every month, providing nutritious food packages that last for one month. Each package contains rice, pasta, lentils, peanut butter, and oil. The agency has recently increased aid by 10,000 food parcels, partly due to the tragic and damaging Israel-Gaza conflict that resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people most of them civilians.

The conflict has taken its toll it has left more than 100,000 people displaced, including thousands of children, according to the United Nations. The WFP is calling on the Israeli authorities to allow more food and fuel into Gaza, where electricity is often cut off and sporadic gunfire can make it dangerous or impossible for trucks or aid convoys to move.

"I fear that if this crisis does not resolve quickly, we will be seeing widespread famine in Gaza sooner rather than later," warned Beasley.
