Cyber criminals posing as senior government officials have extorted an astonishing Rs 33.4 lakh from an elderly man in Hyderabad by leveraging intimidation tactics and fake documents, according to a recent investigation.
The victim, a 73-year-old man from Bowenpally, Hyderabad, first received a call on July 25, 2025, from an individual claiming to be Inspector Gourav Sarathi from the Karnataka Crime Branch. This individual made allegations alleging the victim's Aadhaar was misused in a criminal case connected to obscene content and human trafficking.
Soon after, another fraudster introduced himself as IPS officer Daya Nayak, pressing the victim to deposit Rs 15,00,000 for fund verification. The victim made multiple payments over the next several days under various pretenses, receiving constant harassment.
To convince the victim of their legitimacy, the fraudsters provided forged legal documents, including those supposedly issued by the Supreme Court of India and the Income Tax Department. A third impersonator, claiming to be a Supreme Court auditor, assured the victim that the funds would be refunded after verification.
The victim realized he had been scammed after the fraudsters became unreachable after August 8, 2025, when he had transferred the final amount.
Cybercrime investigators have since taken up the case, warning the public to be vigilant against cyber arrest scams, where fraudsters impersonate officials and exploit fears to extract money.
As a cautionary measure, citizens are advised never to respond to threatening calls and to verify any official communication directly with the law enforcement authorities.
"These fraudsters leverage fear and intimation to collect lifesaving amounts. We must be vigilant and verify the authenticity of any government official claiming to be reaching out to you," stated a cybercrime investigator self-conscious of the ongoing investigation.
