Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district recently witnessed protests led by villagers from Tada, demanding that the government reverse its decision to acquire agricultural land for the purpose of allocating house pattas, or titles.
Protestors expressed deep dissatisfaction with the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government, threatening self-immolation if the government did not change its decision. They argued that the government should focus on unused government lands in the vicinity of Vijayawada if it genuinely seeks to assist underprivileged citizens.
A petition has been filed with the Collector, local MLAs, and MRO to avoid the acquisition, emphasizing that their families have cultivated these lands for over 60 years. According to one protestor, since the inception of the YSRCP government, they have faced relentless harassment and intimidation as Dalits.
She underscored that officials have been sent to address the issue, but they have not resolved anything, demanding Rs 20,000 for every cent from the farmers. She concluded by saying that the police threaten them daily and pressurize them to vacate the land.
