Indian businessman and former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has reportedly caused a stir amid talks of a potential IPL franchise auction. Modi, who is also the founder of the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, took to Instagram to discuss the potential value of an IPL team in Bengaluru, pointing to the city's popularity and the team's performance in recent seasons.
According to Modi, RCB could be the most valuable franchise in the IPL, owing to the city's populace and the potential for growth. "RCB should be the most expensive team as it has a huge potential and limited resources to make money. With Bengaluru you have an instant huge population to tap into as a fan base and with RCB you have a team that's much much closer to winning than say a team from say Guwahati," he said in the post.
He also advised team owners not to sell their franchises for less than $2 billion. "Any buyer of an IPL franchise should be prepared to pay between USD 1 billion to USD 2 billion. Selling franchises cheaper than that would be a huge loss for the owners," he wrote in a follow-up post.
These remarks come as the IPL considers renewing franchising bids for the upcoming season. As the league prepares for an auction, reportedly scheduled for February, organizers will likely take note of Modi's explosive comments, which could potentially change the landscape of the IPL for seasons to come.
