Election Commission denies knowledge of crucial committee it had cited in Supreme Court

The Election Commission has landed in another soup, adding to its plethora of recent mishaps and controversies. In a bizarre twist, the Election Commission has denied any knowledge of an 'independent appraisal committee', which it had cited in the Supreme Court as the reason for undertaking the recent SIR (special intensive revision) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The Election Commission's surprising denial came in response to a RTI query by an activist.

The EC had told the apex court that the committee, led by G.S.rilanka, the then deputy election commissioner, had recommended the SIR exercise in Bihar on account of "large-scale inclusion of ineligible voters" in the state's electoral list. The court had queried about the basis for the 2018 decision, to which the EC responded with details of the committee's findings.

However, the Election Commission, in a reply to the RTI query, stated that "no such report or recommendation of the committee is in possession of the Election Commission". This raises serious questions about the transparency and credibility of the Election Commission, especially given its recent spate of mishandlings and errors that have called the commission's neutrality and efficiency into question.

Only time will tell what consequences these continual blunders will have not just for the Election Commission but also for the public's trust in the electoral system and process.
